Many people in the world today, and throughout history, believe that the way to achieve happiness, world peace, or whatever their goal is, is to conquer others.  Others they think are their opponents.  In truth, the only one you need to change is yourself.  You need to conquer your own unworthy desires and your egotistical wishes.  A huge ego may help you become a corporate president, but it will  not help you at all to become spiritual.  That is why Jesus told the wealthy man that he would have to give his wealth to the poor if he wanted to join them.  People who are too attached to material things can't significantly develop their spiritual side.
