Spiritual Symbols: Honey

Honey was believed by some ancients to impart virility and fertility, in short, an aphrodisiac.  It also has spiritual symbolic meaning.  Honey is a symbol of immortality (probably because it doesn't spoil).  It also symbolizes rebirth and initiation.  Honey was often used as an offering to God and other spirits.  The Essenes sent honey and flour to the temple as their offering rather than animals to be sacrificed.  In ancient Greek culture, honey symbolized wisdom, eloquence and genius.  Greek tradition says that Pythagoras ate nothing but honey.  To Christians, it is a symbol of the ministry of Jesus.  In the promised land, milk and honey flow like rivers.  Honey can represent Divine Bliss, Nirvana or enlightenment.  To the ancient Egyptians, honey was the tears of Ra, the solar deity.  In modern psychiatry, honey represents the higher self.  In Hindu mythology, honey symbolizes anything delightful.
