Be Flexible
When I heard on the news recently that Art Chokey, creator of Gumby had died, it brought back memories of his creation. Gumby was a kind of superhero. Being made of clay, he could stretch like Mr. Fantastic, he could roll himself into a ball and roll away from trouble, and he could change himself into various other shapes as the need arose. He was the ultimate in flexibility.
We all need do be flexible in these days as well. We need to be able to move into new jobs as old ones fade out of existence and new ones are created. We need to be able to adjust to climate change. We need to be able to adjust to changes in our neighborhoods as new people from different lands and different religions move in. At the same time, we need to learn to be reasonably self-reliant. We need to be able to grow our own food, build our own shelters, etc. A s the natural disasters such as the earthquake in Haiti continue, and probably get worse, we can't assume there will always be a supermarket nearby to supply food, doctors nearby to care for us when we are sick and police nearby to protect us from criminals (that is not a suggestion to run out and buy guns). On the spiritual side, we need to stop clinging to old beliefs out of faith and tradition and start really looking at the religious and spiritual teachings we are accepting and supporting, financially or otherwise.
The best thing to do to help with becoming more flexible is to reconnect with God and listen to your hunches, intuition, or whatever you call it.
