Jesus and Animal Rights

Many Christians believe that Jesus was against commerce on church property because he chased the money changers out of the temple court.  While that may be true, they seem to forget that in addition to the money changes, who were their there only to provide visitors with local currency so they could buy animals to be sacrificed, He threw out the sellers of bird and animals.  He also knocked over the cages freeing the animals and birds.
It sounds like what Jesus was really opposing was the sacrifice of animals at the temple.  That is not really surprising since most scholars now accept that Jesus and his family were members of the Essene sect.  The Essenes were known to oppose animal sacrifice also.  Instead of sending animals to the temple to be sacrificed, they sent honey and flour as their required donation to the temple.
