Understanding Spiritual Writings

There is a sacred science, and for thousands of years ccountless inquisitive people have sought in vain to penetrate its “secrets”.  It is as if the attempt to dig a hole in the sea with an ax.  The tool must be of the same nnature as the objective to be worked upon.
Spirit is found only with spirit, and esoterism is the spiritual aspect of the world, inaccessible to cerebral intelligence.
~R. A. Schwaller de Lubicz

Many materialist and intellectuals read scripture and other spiritual writings and try to understand it with the intellect of the brain, the material intellect designed to deal with the material world.  They inevitable find that either these writing make little sense and so usually dismiss religion and spiritual beliefs altogether or they form a completely false understanding of the scripture based on the literal and material meaning of the words.  As the above quote indicates, you can’t understand spiritual writings with the wrong tools. The correct tools for understanding spiritual teachings are the spirit and the soul.  Using the wrong tools will result in false interpretation as happens with the white supremacists who will quote scripture that “proves”  people of color are inferior or homophobics who quote scripture to justify their personal beliefs (while carefully ignoring other things in the Bible that, when taken in a similar literal vein, condemn much of their own behavior such as wearing makeup or clothing of multiple colors).
This is one reason much of what Jesus taught in private to the apostles was never put into writing.  To do so was not possible without distorting the meaning because, sadly, human languages are not equipped to express spiritual matters.  Spiritual matters can only be understood by the soul which understands symbols, not language.
