 Some New Year's customs and traditions
  • The ancient Babylonians were the first in recorded history to celebrate New Years.  They were also the first to have new year's resolutions.
  • The ancient Greeks were the first to use a baby to symbolize the new year.
  • In Scotland, shortly after midnight on New Year's Eve, people visit neighbors to wish them good luck in the new year.  It is considered especially lucky if a tall, dark and handsome young man is the first to visit.
  • In Japan, Buddhist temples strike their bells 108 times to ring in the new year.  The 108 rings represent the 108 types of human weaknesses they are trying to dispel.
  • The Dutch make bonfires using Christmas trees
  • The old custom in Armenia was for groups of children to go around singing songs on New Years
  • The Danish monarch gives a speech at 6:00 PM New Year's Eve
  • The ancient Egyptians celebrated with a parade led by the Pharaoh, while modern Egyptians have a big party and Muslim women are allowed to wear bright colors for the day.
