Look at the Whole Person

I thought I hated Ralphy
I thought he hated me
His church another color
His yard without a tree.

I thought I hated Ralphy
Until some help was needed
And when I called it out
Ralphy quickly heeded.

So I took another look at him
And he wasn't all that strange
We had many thing in common
When I looked at the whole range.

Now we are true neighbors
We both have learned so much,
By allowing for some differences
The rest of us can touch.

We all have some prejudices to overcome.  We hate to admit it, but we do.  They may be very mild and subtle, but they exist.  One thing that can help us overcome our prejudices is to look at the whole person, not just a smaal part such as his/her religion, nationality, race, sexual orientation, financial status or education.  So when you find yourself being prejudice against a person for some generalized idea like that, look at that person more closely.  Make a list of the things you have in common, the things you agree on.  You will probably find that your differences are far outnumbered by the things you have in common.
