Healing Herbs: Dandelion

    Dandelion today is known mostly as a weed that most of us try to get rid of when we find it growing in out lawn.  We shouldn't.  Dandelion is a very healthy and useful plant.  Dandelion leaves can be used in a healthy salad and they are good sources of vitamin c and vitamin a, iron, potassium and other minerals.  Herbalist use dandelion mostly as a digestive aid and diuretic.  They also can help reduce high blood pressure and improve liver and gall bladder functions.  Dandelion contains lecithin which research indicates may help prevent cirrhosis of the liver.   Native americans use dandelion to treat kidney ailments, upset stomach, swelling and skin problems.  The Chinese herbalists use it to treat appendicitis and breast problems.  European herbalist use it to treat eye problems, fevers and diabetes.  There is some evidence that it can aid in weight loss.

    The name comes form the French dent de lion which means teeth of a lion and is a reference to the shape of the leaves, not the flower.
