Healing Herbs: Juniper Berries

    Juniper berries have been a common folk remedy for a variety of ills.  It is used for uninary tract infections and other problems in the urinary tract.  It is also used to treat gallstones and gout.  It aids digestion and can eliminate gassyness and stomach cramps.  The Zunis used them to help pregnant woman give birth.  British herbalists used to use them to treat heart problems.  Modurn herbalist use them primarily blended with other herbs as tratment for bladder infections.
    The ancient Greeks used a fermented and distilled liquor made with juniper berries to treat a variety of ailments.  Italian monks later made an alcoholic drink using juniper berries, but a Dutch phisician is given credit for what is now called gin and is not recommended for medical purposes.
    At Redrock Sanctuary in Reno, there are a lot of juniper bushes growing wild.
