Spiritual Symbols: Loom or Weaving

A loom or someone Weaving is symbolic of creation, especially the weaving, or creation, of the universe.  In many belief systems, goddesses of fate or time are depicted as weaving or with a loom.  Of course anything that comes from a loom — carpet, tapestry, tablecloth, etc — can also symbolize creation.  The crossing of the threads on the loom is often seen as the two forces that work together to create:  male and female, positive and negative, hot and cold, yin and yang.  The two sisters night and day weave the fabric of time.  In ancient Egypt, the god Neith was the weaver of the world and his symbol was a spider which also weaves.  Buddhists see this weaving as a weaving of illusion, ie, the material world.  In the Upanishads, Brahma, the Supreme Principle, is described as "That on which the worlds are woven as warp and weft".  Weaving also symbolizes how everything in the universe, material and spiritual, is connected by a web of invisible thread, what we in the International Community of Christ call "the Thread of Life" and wear a symbolic version of on our waist.
