Vampires
What is the fascination we have with vampires? Since the first vampire movie of the 1920's, they have been popular. The most recent crop of vampire movies and books is somewhat different. In a weak effort to be somewhat original, authors have changed vampires from evil creatures of the night to misunderstood, but lovable hunky guys. Sunlight doesn't burn them up, it just makes them sparkle like jewels! Nonetheless, they are still vampires and that is still not a lovable thing or a desirable thing. So why the fascination?
Perhaps it is just a variation of Bad Boy Syndrome, like the women who fall in love (or something they think is love) with a convicted murderer. The idea of being in a situation that is somewhat dangerous to cause an adrenalin rush like those roller coasters that throw kids around in a manner that would get their parents arrested for child abuse if they did it.
Perhaps we have become obsessed with evil, or just the idea of evil because we don't believe in it anyway.
Or perhaps some part of us knows instinctively that there is something more to life than the material world and the pursuit of material pleasure and something — anything — that reminds them that there is more, grabs their attention.
