About Shame

Shame is something everyone suffers from to some extent.  We may be ashamed of things we did when we did when we were young and didn't know any better.  We may be ashamed of things that were not even wrong, but we were told were wrong when we were little kids such as our parents telling us that it was wrong to touch a member of the opposite sex in certain ways or to be seen naked by a member of the opposite sex, while neglecting to mention that it would be OK when you got older.  We may be ashamed of things we did out of ignorance because we know better now.  Many churches even encourage people to feel shame.
Shame is not a positive emotion; it's a destructive one.  It makes us constantly believe, usually on a subconscious level, that we are bad people, we need to be punished and we are not worthy.  Instead of destroying ourselfs, and sometimes those around us, with guilt and shame, we need to accept that we are human so we make mistakes.  We are not perfect.  If we were, we would be in Heaven.  Instead of being filled with shame, we should simply forgive our past mistakes and strive  to better ourselves every day.
