Our Speedy World

Our modern world is one of speed.  We want to do everything as rapidly as possible.  Our employers want us to be as productive as possible which most equate to working as quickly as possible.  We drive fast, eat fast (bad for proper digestion and weight control), talk fast and write fast.  We use abbreviations as much as possible so we can write faster.  We try to take the fastest route when we travel.
The results of this obsession with speed is obesity, stress, illness, accidents and often poor quality work.  That is why, in the world of spiritual development, there are no shortcuts or abbreviations.  No drive-thru where you can order a quick breakfast of enlightenment on your way to work.  This is annoying to many, but necessary.  Spiritual development, the real kind anyway, is so foreign to our very materialistic and egoistic world, that we must be introduced to it gradually to allow it to sink in and to prevent it from overwhelming us.
