In order to get somewhere, we first have to know where we are.  We have to be aware of where we are and who we are.   To travel to a physical location we first have to know where our correct physical location is.  If you want to fly to London, for example, you have to know what airport to fly from.  
    The same is true for spiritual development.  We have to honestly evaluate where we currently are on the path to spiritual development to know where and how to proceed.  Even though we know what the ultimate goal is, namely complete enlightenment also known as Christ Consciousness, we need to know what the next step is and that means we need to know where we are now.      
    Also, we need to know who we are if we wish to understand the importance of spiritual development.   What we are is not our jobs, our physical bodies, or even our minds.  What we really are is spiritual beings that descended into the material planes of existence.  If we don't realize that we are spiritual beings trying to return to our previous state, we will find it impossible to get there.  And, of course, as I frequently remind everyone, we can all benefit from the help of a good spiritual teacher.
