Side-Tracked
When people are asked why they don't exercise more, the usual answer is that they can't find the time or that they get side-tracked by other things. Any exercise guru will tell you those are just excuses.
Nobody has time to do everything they would like to do. That is a simple fact of life. So we have to set priorities and not let ourselves get side-tracked. When those exercise gurus look closely at the schedule of these people who can't stick with an exercise plan, they find that they are spending a significant amount of time, often several hours a day, sitting around watching TV or other non-productive activities. Usually, they are not even aware that they are wasting so much time. So you have to decide that exercise is important enough to get a high priority on your list. Too high to frequently get canceled for those non-productive activities.
The same is true for spiritual development. In our busy, modern world, many people would like to work on spiritual growth, but claim they can't fine the time for it, or they plan to do something spiritual and get side-tracked. This can only happen if your giving spiritual development a low priority on your to-do list. We have to get away from the idea that because we don't have a boss breathing down our necks impatiently waiting for us to get it done, that it is low priority. Our soul and spirit is eternal. We need to think about that and realize that since it is eternal, it should take priority over other activities. This doesn't mean that you have to quit your job and retreat to a remote monastery. It does mean that you should put some time aside, fifteen minutes a day or thirty minutes every other day, to work on it. And don't allow yourself to get side-tracked accept by a real emergency.
