Spiritual Extremes

In many areas of life today we see extremes.  In politics, we have the extreme conservatives on one side who think we have way too much government and pay way too much for it and the extreme liberals who think government should run just about everything regardless of what it costs in taxes and lost freedoms.  In business, there are those companies who operate as if the only thing that matters is making big prophets and those who are mostly concerned with providing things that people really need in an environmentally-friendly way even if they make very little profit.  And in religion and spirituality, we have the extreme materialists on one end of the spectrum who either don't believe in God or an afterlife, or think such things should be of no interest until you die and go to the afterlife, and , at the other end of the spectrum, those who spend their entire life in some spiritual retreat praying, meditating, chanting, etc.
I think most of us understand that the extremes in politics and business are not the best choices and the correct path lies somewhat in the middle.  The same is true of religion and spirituality.  If you wait until you are dead to concern yourself with your soul it is too late — your soul will go to Heaven, but without you.  On the other hand, if you spend your entire life praying, chanting and trying to save your soul, you are contributing little to the society you are part of or even to aiding the spiritual development of others.  We have both a physical body and a spiritual body, both a mind and a soul, so we need to take care of our complete being.
