Random Thoughts 7-19-2009

It figures.  I finally broke down and bought an Amazon Kindle two weeks ago and this week the price dropped.  I don't think you really save money by getting books electronically, but you certainly save space.

Yesterday I visited a Hindu temple near where I live in Northern Virginia.  I was there to see Rajan Zed receive an honor.  Zed is the Hindu leader who made news when he gave the prayer at the start of a meeting of the U. S. Senate.  He lives in Reno and is a friend of Bishop Gene Savoy Jr, head of the International Community of Christ.  He was also one of the participants in our interfaith prayer for peace last year.  I found the event very interesting.  Rajan Zed introduced me to the president of the temple who gave me a quick tour of the temple itself before the talks started in the assembly hall below.  Several Hindu leaders from around the country were there to give talks on various subjects.  Very different from a Christian church.

I think lawns are one of the strangest things.  We want the lawn to be only two or three inches high, but we plant grasses that will naturally grow one or two feet tall.   So then we have to mow every week or so to keep it short, which damages and stresses the grass so we have to water it and fertilize it frequently to keep it from dying.  Wouldn't it be smarter to use plants that only grow two or three inches tall?
