An Unfulfilled Need
When we have a need that is unfulfilled, we often end up substituting something else without even being aware of what we are doing. When our body is not getting the nutrients it needs because of our food choices, we often end up eating too much and becoming fat as our bodies try desperately to meet those needs.
Sometimes, the same type of thing can happen with spiritual needs. A part of us may be craving spiritual enlightenment but, because we are not spiritual or religious, we end up trying to fill that need with material possessions. We keep buying more things, only to find that the need is still with us, so we buy more and more and more. This is the sort of thing that often happens to the very wealthy and to celebrities. They have a need for one thing but, because they don't understand that need, they try to satisfy it with something else only to find that the need remains. So rather than condemning those who are caught up in this vicious cycle of buying things to try to satisfy a spiritual need, we should understand and, if we know them personally, try to wake them up to what they really need. And that goes for our own cravings as well.
