Jealousy

We all know that jealousy is not a good thing yet, in some why, just about all of us have it at times.  Not necessarily jealousy over a spouse or lover, but jealousy, or envy if you prefer, over anything.  It might be jealousy over the property or things another person has.  It might be envy over another persons fame or success.  We might not think it's jealousy, but if you find yourself saying or thinking something like "he doesn't deserve such fame", "she didn't deserve to inherit so much money, she'll just waste it", or similar expressions, that is jealousy.  This is not only true of material things, but can also happen with spiritual things, especially because we don't all develop our spiritual side at the same speed.  This may cause us to be jealous of someone who progresses spiritually faster than we do.
So what should we do to free ourselfs of jealousy?  First, we have to recognize it for what it is and why we are jealous.  We are never envious of someone for something we think we could easily get for ourselves.  So the reason, in most cases, why we are jealous is because we believe that we deserve the fame, wealth, or perfect lawn more than that other person and yet, we also believe, at least subconsciously, that we will never get it.  Just recognizing this often goes a long way in reducing envy of others.  The next step though is to understand that we can have what that other person has.  The key is, we have to get rid of the belief that we can't get it, don't deserve it, and it will just spoil us rotten if we do.  A large part of that is believing that God wants you to succeed.  Mostly in spiritual matters, but even in material things, God wants us to live in reasonable comfort with enough food, clothing, good health, etc.  The belief that God wants us to suffer is simply false.  God may not want us to be totally materialistic billionaires, but he doesn't want us to live in poverty and poor health either.  So if you think that something is good for you, materially or spiritually, and will not harm your spiritual development, than you need to tell yourself that you can have it and start working for it.  If you need help getting there, there are a number of good books in the self-help section.  I also highly recommend the Psych-K weekend workshops if you need a more hands-on approach.  I used it to get rid of my fear of heights, but it doesn't have to be phobias.  It can help you get over any negative programs that have become stuck in your subconscious.  And, as always, I recommend working with a good spiritual teacher or school.
