Greek Philosophers: Socrates

Socrates, and his students Plato, are the best known of the ancient Greek philosophers.  Socrates is known from the writings of his students.  He is considered a founder of western philosophy.  He is especially known for his contribution to the study of ethics and a form of debate using questions that is called "The Socratic Method".   He once visited the Oracle at Delphi who stated that he was the wisest man in Greece.  While not a lot is known about him, we do know Socrates was a very spiritual person.  When he was on trial for heresy,  he told the jurors they should be worrying more about their souls and less about their families, jobs and politics.

Quotes from Socrates:

All men's souls are immortal, but the souls of the righteous are immortal and divine.

As to marriage or celibacy, let a man take which course he will, he will be sure to repent.

Be slow to fall into friendship; but when thou art in, continue firm and constant.

Beware the barrenness of a busy life.

False words are not only evil in themselves, but they infect the soul with evil.

I decided that it was not wisdom that enabled poets to write their poetry, but a kind of instinct or inspiration, such as you find in seers and prophets who deliver all their sublime messages without knowing in the least what they mean.
