Superheroes
Did you have a favorite superhero when you were a child? I had several. Superman was my first favorite, than Flash, Aquaman, Green Lantern, and Gold (one of the MetalMen), not necessarily in that order. Did you sometimes pretend to be your favorite superhero? Or just imagine what it would be like to be a superhero? Most of us did. There is nothing wrong with it. In fact, looking up to heroes is a good thing; it gives us something to strive for.
The problem with the superheros though is that they are fictional characters. Fun when we were kids, but as adults, we need real heroes.
We can have different heroes for different parts of our lives. Business heroes for our work responsibilities. A domestic goddess like Martha Steward for our home responsibilities. A famous artist like Picasso or Robert Frost for our hobby. And, of course, we need heroes for our spiritual life as well. Not just the major prophets and avatars, but also some fairly contemporary people who have achieved a lot or been an inspiration to you in your quest for spiritual enlightenment.
We need such heroes because it is much easier to believe we can accomplish something if we know that other regular people did it. We might find it hard to believe the we could accomplish what Moses, Buddha or Jesus did, but it is a lot easier to believe that we can accomplish what Mother Teresa or Martin Luther King, Jr accomplished, just to give a few examples.
