Scripture: the Tejobindu Upanishad 1-3
Let us meditate on the shining Self,
Changeless, underlying the world of change,
And realize in the heart in samadhi.
Hard to reach is the supreme goal in life,
Hard to describe and hard to abide in.
They alone attain samadhi who have
Mastered their senses and are free from anger,
Free from self-will and from likes and dislikes,
Without selfish bonds to people and things.
The shining Self is the spiritual self. To awaken it and achieve samadhi (enlightenment, Christ Consciousness) requires hard work and dedication. Part of that is conquering our senses and controlling our ego. But what about being free from likes and dislikes? That means that we need to stop judging everything according to what we like. For example, most people would not complain about someone stepping on a cockroach but would be appalled if someone did the same to a kitten. To an enlightened person, there is no difference, life is life and if the kitten deserves to live, so does the cockroach.
