Book Review: through a Dog's Ear
through a Dog's Ear
by Joshua Leeds & Susan Wagner
This book is about the use of music to help improve the behavior of your dog. The right music can help your pet overcome separation anxiety, fear of certain noises such as fireworks and garbage trucks, and calm them down under almost any stressful situation. Leeds is an authority on psychoacoustics. Wagner is a veterinary neurologist. They also worked with pianist Lisa Spector to study the effects of not only different types of music on dogs, but also, what arrangements worked best for soothing stressed out pooches. The book comes with a CD of sample music to use for calming your pets and other CDs are available online. I've used the CD for over a week now on my dog, Cocoa, who gets separation anxiety and I think it is helping already.

I recently bought a DVD made for dogs with separation anxiety. You put it in when you leave and it has music and fun play scenes to relax your dog and keep his attention so he is not upset about being home.

That is good too if the dog tends to watch the TV. Some people think that just leaving the TV or radio on when they are gone will make the pets feel someone is home, but unless the sounds are carefully selected to be soothing to pets, they may actually make the situation worse.
