We are all important in the sense that God has important work for each of us.  We may not become famous, but that doesn't mean our contribution is not important.  The smallest bolt is just as important in the Golden Gate bridge as the largest girder because they all contribute to the whole.  But that is only true if we open ourselfs up to what is possible, develop our spiritual faculties, and let God work through us.  If we don't, someone else will be chosen to do our part and we will be left out in the cold and dark.  Heaven is not a place for eternal rest; it is a place for those who are willing to work hard to serve God and help save the fallen worlds (that's us!).
