Role Models
Nearly all of us have role models for some areas of our lives. It is probably a good thing that we have role models. People we look up to be an example for us. Unfortunately, it seems like the type of people we look up to as role models has changed drastically over the last few centuries.
Today, we look to athletes, especially professional ones, as role models. That is probably fine if your intention is to be in the NFL or the NBA, but outside of sports, these people usually are not good models at all. They get arrested for drinking, using drugs, carrying unregistered guns, shooting guns, fighting, etc.
Others look to successful business people as role models. And what are we finding out about them (if we didn't always know it). They are often devious, lying, greedy people who will do pretty much anything to get ahead of the competition and make a buck. Their sense of ethics and morality is either badly warped or non-existent.
Wouldn't it be great if more people started having role models like Gandhi, Abe Lincoln, St. Francis, or Thomas Jefferson? People who tried to make life better for all of us, not just for themselves?
