Martin Luther King Day

Some Quotes from Martin Luther King Jr:

A nation or civilization that continues to produce soft-minded men purchases its own spiritual death on the installment plan.

A right delayed is a right denied.

An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.

Everything that we see is a shadow cast by that which we do not see.

I'm sure Dr. King's spirit will be in Washington tomorrow for the Inauguration.

The Obama's have changed Martin Luther King day to Martin Luther King's Day of Service. They are asking all Americans to donate their time to a day of service volunteering in their community. I think it's a wonderful idea. It's easy for people to complain about the state of the country but in order for change to happen we all have to take part and get off our duffs and do our part. If people don't have the whole day they can do an hour or even a few minutes during lunch break. There is something everyone of every age or ability to do. Tonight is the first meeting for the planning of our communities summer festival. The entire event is planned and put on by volunteers. This is a very low income area so having a yearly festival brings a little joy to an area that doesn't have a lot. The kids love the free games and the local artisans depend of the sales from the day so although it's a fun event it is greatly needed and appreciated. I am on the festival committee so that's where I will be volunteering today. It's a great feeling to volunteer and do something helpful. It's great for your spirit as well as those your helping. If someone doesn't have time for much they could always just drop off a bag of food to an area food pantry or some old clothes or a blanket to a shelter in the area. Please remember the animals too! I went through my pets cabinets and cleaned it out and donated treats and hair brushes and cat nip toys and so on that my pet's had to many off to a pet owner in the area that is going through a hard time to help her keep her pets. There are many ways to help, just look around with an open heart and you will see the options that best suit you.

A day of community service is certainly a good way to honor the memory of Dr. King.
