Happy New Year
To continue my history of New Year's Day, here is some history about traditional foods.
In General, many people believed, and a few still do, that what they eat on New Year's Day can affect the luck and prosperity they have in the coming year. In some areas of the United States, the traditional meal include black-eyed peas and ham or some other cut of pork. Legumes such as black-eyed peas bring good luck and ham is a symbol of prosperity. The Italian version is sausages served over lentils. Cabbage, Collard, or other greens is another traditional food for New Year's Day. The green color represents money and financial success. The Greeks serve a cake with a coin inside. The person who gets the coin will have good luck. In Spain, twelve grapes are eaten on the stroke of midnight. This may have turned into the tradition of drinking champagne on New Year's Day, but no one really knows. The champagne tradition is a mystery.
