Christmas Displays and Atheists

I don't understand why atheists are so strongly opposed to nativity scenes in public places.  If, as they claim, there is no God and Jesus is not the Son of God, why should they object to the display of a peasant child and his parents?  If that is all they are, then what is the objectionable part of the display?  These  displays are not accompanied by signs that say Jesus is Messiah.  They are not accompanied by signs that say atheists are blind fools who can't believe anything spiritual but can believe Egyptian civilization was founded by aliens and the vast material universe was created from nothing, by nothing and for no reason.  In other words, there is nothing insulting to atheists or anyone else in these displays.
On one point, I do agree with the atheists.  If people of faith are allowed to display statues and religious symbols like a crèche and a menorah in government buildings than the atheists should be allowed to do the same.  They should be allowed to put up a statue or painting of one of their heroes such as Karl Marks or Madalyn O'Hair, but not a sign insulting people of faith.  People of faith are not doing that so why should the atheists be allowed to?
On the other hand, I find it interesting that atheists claim they can be good, moral, ethical people without belief in any kind of supreme being, and then prove by their behavior the past month that all they can be is hateful, divisive and intolerant.
