Random Thoughts 12-14-2008
It's both sad and ironic that these three pet stories were all in the news this past week:
1) An infant that slept in the woods overnight in below freezing temperatures was found alive the next day because his two puppies slept against him and kept him warm.
2) A dog was shot three times protecting his human family
3) A woman was arrested when a neighbor found her dog frozen to the sidewalk. The owner claims she couldn't get him to come inside. Probably because the old dog is so morbidly obese, he can hardly walk.
I thought by now I would find some good stories of Christmas Spirit in the news, but nothing yet, so instead:
Take this little quiz to see if you have Christmas Spirit.
More stupid crimes and dump criminals:
A cop in an unmarked car noticed when he pulled into the parking lot at a mall, three teenages trying to break into cars. He parked his car, crouched down so he wouldn't be seen, and waited. Sure enough, the teens tried to break into his car and two were arrested. The third got away.
A guy tried to crack open a stolen ATM by dropping it off a cliff but, when he backed his pickup next to the cliff so it would slide off the back, the truck itself went over with him in it.
In Sweden, a women charged with drunk driving admitted that she had been drinking but insisted her driving was not impaired because she closed one eye so she wouldn't see double.
A professional crook in Massachusetts filed for compensation when he was released after spending six months in jail for what was ruled an illegal arrest. The judge wisely decided that since his only income during that six months would have come from illegal activities, the amount of compensation due was zero.

Here are a couple more shocking pet stories. In a small town in Maine, I think Searsport there is someone taking pet dogs out of peoples yard to torture and shoot them then dump them on the side of the road. These are all friendly family pets. There are no leads to who is doing this horrific crime. The most recent were a 2 year old great dane and a 5 month old great dane puppy. These people need to see more of these hero pet stories. The next one I just saw while looking at the ones you have posted here. Here is the link to the story of a dog that is video taped dodging traffic on a busy highway to get to another dog that was hit and killed. It shows him dragging the body of his dead friend across the highway to get him out of the road. You see things like this and it really makes you even more sickened at how horrible these beautiful beings are so often abused. They have brains, hearts and souls usually kinder than most humans!

I had heard about the dog running out into traffic to pull his friend to the side, but I didn't get the details until today. Actually, I know of a similar story from when I was in the army in Germany. Our unit had a couple of stray dogs that were unofficial pets. One was a toy poodle mix and the other a great dane. Despite the size difference, they became good friends. One day, for some unknown reason, the poodle ran out into traffic and was hit and killed. The great dane ran out to help his buddy and stood over him barking at the cars to stay away. When the German police arrived, they had a difficult time getting him away from his friend. This actually happened shortly before I arrrived in Germany, but some of the other guys told me the story.
