Church VS Church

The latest battles in church vs church are:

  • The decision by about 700 Episcopal churches in the U.S. and Canada to form a new church called the Anglican Church of the U. S.  This is happening because the more conservative churches oppose the more liberal views of the heads of the Episcopal Church, primarily, for ordaining gay priests and bishops.
  • The other recent one is the proposition 8 battle in California which the conservative churches (LDS and Catholic in particular) supported and more liberal churches, especially MCC opposed.
There are probably others, but those two have been in the new lately.

It seems that either God is very confused and contradicts himself regularly, or people are assigning there own beliefs to God in an effort to legitimize them.   I don't believe God contradicts himself, so I have to assume the latter is what's happening.
I find this attitude strange.  I thought the purpose of joining a church was to learn truth and correct behavior from the leaders of the church and the prophets and messiahs who founded them, but it seems that now, many people form their personal beliefs first, then seek out a church that agrees or, if they can't find one, just start another.
My biggest concern about this is that while churches are fighting each other, atheists are gaining ground in their fight to make religion illegal.
