Healing Herbs: Blueberries
Blueberries are a healthy and tasty treat that is also healing. The leaves, usually dried, is the main part used for medicinal purposes, but the fruit also has some healing properties.
Blueberries are very high in antioxidants and aid circulation. They have been found to help with preventing Alzheimer's and other types of dementia related to aging. They have also been shown to reduce the brain damage caused by stroke. Eating blueberries regularly reduces the buildup of bad cholesterol. They have been found to help reduce the risk of urinary tract infections, apparently by preventing the bacteria from clinging to the bladder walls. The blue pigment in blueberries and there European cousin bilberries, have been shown to help improve eyesight. Blueberries can prevent and stop diarrhea by eliminating the bacteria that causes it.
Blueberry leaves made into tea offers many of the same benefits as blueberries. They also have been shown to reduce blood sugar and protect against colon cancer.
Red wine has been recommended in recent years due to the health benefits of anthocyanins found in red wine. Blueberry wine has 38% more anthocyanins than red grape wine. Excema, particularly in infants, can be helped with lotions made from blueberry leaves.
Caution, blueberry leaves contain oxalates which can crystallize in the kidneys so should not be used frequently by those with kidney disease or urinary tract problems. The berries do not contain oxalates.
