Barriers are primarily within our own minds.  Yes fences, glass ceilings, etc are real, but they limit us only when we believe they limit us.  If we believe we can, and we really want to, we can always find a way over, around or threw through barriers.

If you don't think we are a youth oriented society consider this.  A ten year old kid has little brown spots.  I have little brown spots.  The kid is young so his brown spots are called freckles and they're cute.  I'm an old guy so my brown spots are called age spots and they're ugly.
