Random Thoughts 11-9-2008

I don't understand how California could vote sixty-one percent for Obama, yet pass proposition 8 banning gay marriage by fifty-two percent.  How do you vote for a progressive candidate that represents diversity and tolerance than vote for intolerance and bigotry?  And don't give me the nonsense about protecting the "sanctity of marriage".   Allowing gays to marry takes nothing away from straight marriages.

On the other hand, we can be thankful that California did pass Prop. 2 which requires animal farm factories to keep animals in cages or stalls large enough that they can turn around in.  Of course, that's only one state so the factories will probably just move.

I tried to open an online broker account this week.  Yesh!  After signing or acknowledging about 200 forms, I gave up.

I didn't get sick or injured this week so I guess I avoided whatever the dream was warning me about.

We're bailing out the banking industry for their own greedy mistakes.  We are bailing out home owners who were talked into buying more house than they could reasonable afford.  Now the big-three auto makers are asking to be bailed out for their failure to prepare for changes in the auto buying trends (how much is GM spending to manufacture and advertise the pre-doomed new Hummer?).  What industry will be next?  I agree that the governments should help prevent a complete economic collapse, but how many industries can the tax payers bail out because they made poor decisions that produced short-term profits, but long-term problems?  And if we do bail out the auto industry, will they be required to make autos in the USA again, or will they still make many in Mexico and Canada?

That is odd about California. I think it's odd in general that anyone would care if gays marry. I just don't see how they think it takes away from straight marriage. I'm straight and I'm married and I can certainly say that no matter how many gays marry it will have no effect and cause no damage whatsoever to my straight marriage. Marriage should acknowledge a commitment to love someone and to share life with them and care for them and be committed to them. It should have nothing to do with what sex someone is. I have friends and relatives who are gay and there is no reason in the world that they don't deserve the same right to happiness that me or any one else does.

On the animal farming issue though I do applaud California. It's a small step yes, but at least it's a step in the right direction. I as a human am ashamed of how we treat our animals. I admit I do eat some meat. I eat a lot of beans and legumes instead but I do eat some meat. But we should appreciate the sacrifice the animals we eat are making and give them the basic decency of being able to turn around in their cages and no be so horrifically abused in their service to us!

The government is bailing the huge businesses out of everything and leaving the small businesses with higher and higher taxes making it nearly impossible for the regular person who owns a small business to survive. The regular people who are working all the time to make a living are suffering for all of this. The honest citizen who works 60-80 hours a week and pays their taxes has no government help and keeps having taxes raised to support everyone else. I live in Maine where giving free money and food to anyone that doesn't want to work is extremely common. I had an ad in the paper for a housekeeper and 112 people applied and all but 2 said I can only get paid under the table. It's because of everyone collecting all their handout while they pretend they can't work. What they really do is collect but work under the table. I don't mind at all paying taxes and helping others. I actually believe we spiritually need to do that. I am very generous and very charitable. But I'm getting tired of being taxed to death because every thing is handed to people or companies who make stupid decisions or lie, steal and cheat. It's very frustrating.

I am still shocked that California passed proposition 8! They took one big step forward voting for Obama but took two huge steps back voting for prop 8. Hopefully, since California voted for prop 2, other states will follow. At least it is a step forward in educating the country in the horrific abuse of farm animals.
