Maintaining Balance
In todays materialistic world it is not easy to be spiritual. In ages past, someone who wanted to pursue a spiritual life would join a monastery or convent. Today, that is not practical or necessary for most of us. It is possible to develop our spiritual side, while we still exist within society, hold a regular job, have a family, a house, and all the other social and financial matters to take care of. The trick to it is maintaining a balance between the two sides of your existence. It isn't easy, but with discipline, it can be done. Just as a person on a diet has to discipline his eating habits and a person who joins a gym has to discipline herself to go to workouts regularly, the person seeking spiritual enlightenment has to discipline himself to make time for those spiritual development activities. Only when you reach a high level of spiritual development does it become necessary to withdraw from most social activities and concentrate on your spiritual side without the distractions and negative energies of materialistic pursuits.
