What we Eat
Many people, and some churches, believe that what we eat affects our spiritual development. With rare exception, I don't think that is true, at least not directly. It does in an indirect way because when we eat junk food, or just food that doesn't satisfy our body's nutritional needs, we will lack energy and stamina and probably get sick frequently. When we are sick, tired, or hungry (because we ate, but not what our body needed), we are not going to devote the time necessary for spiritual development. Essentially, for most of us, spiritual development falls into the category of self-actualization which is at the top of Maslow's pyramid. Lower needs must be met first and that includes food and water.
One thing I have noticed that seems a bit strange when we look at the nutritional benefits of certain foods is that no one ever mentions the energy content of the food. Food, like everything else in the material world, is actually made of a mixture of matter and energy. Yet, the energy part is essentially ignored. What if some of the foods we think are good for us based on chemical content, are really not good because of energy with polarities the reverse of ours? I don't know if that is the case, but as far as I know, no one has ever studied that.
So, while eating certain foods will not make you more spiritual and eating others will send you straight to hell *,
proper nutrition can increase your ability to develop your spiritual self.
* My mother once told me about a friend, or distant relative, I don't remember which, who wouldn't eat deviled ham, deviled eggs, devil's food cake, or anything else with "devil" in the name believing that would allow the devil to possess her.
