Seal Hunts

We are all familiar with the Canadian annual seal hunt that draws many protests yet still goes on.  It is over for this year, but now another country is doing it.  This week starts the annual seal hunt in Namibia.  It runs from July 1 to November 15. Up to 6000 adults and 80,000 pups are allowed to be killed by clubbing or shooting.  The Namibian government says this is necessary because the seals eat a lot of fish reducing the supplies for them.  The seals also provide fur skins and meat that can be sold to make money for this poor nation.
The activists for Seal Alert South Africa say the country's seal population is no longer sustainable.  In addition, the market for seal skins and fur is shrinking so it may not be profitable at all.  Those of us involved in spiritual development would add that it also does no good for the nation's Karma

I think the whole thing is disgusting but what really makes it worse is the method. I don't think it should be allowed at all, they have just as much right to the planet as we do. As a matter of fact probably more considering how horribly humans have destroyed it. But if it is going to be allowed why does it have to be done by such insanely barbaric and torturous methods. I can't imagine the kind of person who can club to death a baby seal!
