To most westerners, Jihad is associated with terrorists and Muslim organizations that want to wage "Holy War" against Christians and Jews, Infidels.  That is not the real meaning of Jihad.  The true meaning of Jihad is to "struggle in the way of God".  In other words, the struggle to let our spiritual self surface and awaken our souls.  The struggle between Ego and spirit.     Jihad al-Nafs, the war against self, is the true Jihad.  The violent Jihad, Jihad bil Saif, is considered by many Muslims to not be as important as Jihad al-Nafs.  Unfortunately, this seems to be a minority opinion.  
    Sadly, it is also true of many Christians.  They are more concerned with fighting, whether with war, politics, or economics, those with different beliefs while they have not achieved that awakening of the Light Being within so they are really in no position to judge others.
