How to Get Along with Other Life Forms

In order to function on this planet, we have to deal with other living things, plans and animals, whether we like it or not.  Sadly, the way of doing this for most people is to kill or cage any plant or animal that doesn't do exactly what we want it to.   If bugs start eating our crops, we spray the fields with pesticides — that also kill birds, toads, frogs and lizards that eat bugs.  If weeds invade the fields or lawns, we spray weed killers.  The weeds that survive become stronger and may develop immunity as do the bugs that survive the pesticides.
If it's wolfs, coyotes, or other animals stealing chickens, eating crops or just scaring the kids, the usual solution is to shoot or trap them.
A few have taken an alternate approach that has been shown to be preferable.  The answer is to treat other living things with respect and ASK for their cooperation, don't demand it.  And that includes plants as well as animals.  Even though you may not understand them, they understand you.
If you demand that the plants stop growing in your fields, they will ignore you or perhaps even defy you.  When one farmer tried instead to leave an area of land for the weeds, and asked them politely to grow in that area and stay out of the crops, the weeds cooperated and he had no weed problems that year.  Another had similar results when he asked the insects to not eat his crops.
Every year, I attend the International Community of Christ Convocation in Reno, Nevada.  Some of the lectures and church services are held in Redrock sanctuary.  There are probably two thousand rattlesnakes or more living in the sanctuary.  We are never bothered by them when we are there.  That is because years ago, just after the sanctuary was consecrated, Bishop Savoy communicated with them and made the agreement with the snakes that we would not harm them if they would stay in their holes and away from us when we were in the sanctuary.  We kept our side of the agreement and they have kept theirs.  That is the right way to deal with other living things.
