Sacred Scents
I have done a number of articles on sacred images and a few on sacred sounds but what about the other senses? Can they be stimulated to aid in spiritual development? The answer is yes, at least for the sense of smell. That should not surprise anyone, various religions have been using incense in some form for thousands of years. This isn't done just to make churches smell good. The higher vibrations of these scents can stimulate you to reach higher, more spiritual levels also.
Two of the gifts the Magi brought to Jesus were incense. Frankincense and myrrh are still used in many churches. I use it often on my home altar. There are many other incense fragrances that work well and you can experiment to find which work for you.
Other fragrances can be used also. Many flower scents work well. Simply standing in a garden while you pray or meditate can enhance the experience.
In many churches, clergy members are ordained with a chrism that is usually made of olive oil with natural flower scents added. Those church leaders who understand this practice are careful to select flower scents that will have those higher vibrations to stimulate spiritual awakening.
In addition to using scents to help in spiritual development, sometimes the mysterious arrival of scents while praying, meditating or otherwise practicing your spiritual development techniques, can indicate that your effort has been successful. I recall once I noticed the strong scent of Honeysuckle at a time of year when the honeysuckle was not in bloom. Honeysuckle is a favorite of mine. Sometimes, when people have spiritual visions, they report pleasant, perfume like scents during the vision.
