Religious Artists: Michaelangelo
Michaelangelo, 1475-1564, is one of the best known Renaissance artists. His art, from the Pieta to the ceiling and wall of the Sistine chapel tell us he was a man of religion. In addition to painting and sculpture, he was an architect, a poet and an engineer. He composed hundreds of sonnets and other poems.
Michaelangelo was indifferent to wealth and once told his apprentice "However rich I may have been, I have always lived like a poor man." His religion was Catholic, although some have pointed out that, like Da Vinci, some of his art shows a Gnostic influence.
Usually, on postcards and prints of The Creation from the Sistine chapel, the image is cropped to this:

But the full painting looks like:

Notice the image God has his arm around. Not a cherub like the others, but an adult woman. Indicating that
creation involves both the male and female aspects of God, a Gnostic teaching.
