The Growing Lawlessness

In recent years we are seeing an increase in lawlessness in this country and in the entire world.  There are a number of social and economic reasons that contribute to this, but I want to look at the spiritual side.

When it comes to law, it exists basically as a three tiered hierarchy:  Man's Law, Nature's Law and God’s Law.  God’s law is at the top of the hierarchy.  The laws of nature cannot violate the laws of God.  Man's law is subordinate to both.  We can’t pass a law canceling gravity for example.  That just won’t work.  In recent decades though, men have run amok passing laws about every conceivable thing with little regard for whether or not these laws are contrary to the Will of God.  When this happens, people tend to ignore such laws partly because deep down they are aware that those laws do violate the Will of God and partly because there are just so many laws it has become virtually impossible to obey them all.  The really bad part about this is that once people start ignoring unjust laws that violate the will of God, they soon start to ignore other laws as well.  Then other people follow their example and we end up with a largely lawless society that obeys laws only when it is convenient to do so.
The solution to this problem requires that:

  •  Legislators stop passing laws everytime someone is doing something they don't like, or their constituants don't like.  Make it law only if it really needs to be a law.
  • People need to stop pushing to get laws passed everytime they want the behavior of others to change.  If the cause is just, there are ways to influence others to change without always having to resort to more laws.
  • Most of all, everyone needs to remember the hierarchy of law mentioned above and consider it before making more laws.

Unfortunately, I think we need to develop more spiritual maturity before that will happen, but every great change starts with one person, so don't be afraid to be that one.
