Who Are You?
Who are you? A simple question that you think would be simple to answer, but it isn't.
Let's start with who you are not. You are not your job or profession, no matter how passionate or dedicated you are to it. You are not the place where you live. You are not your education. You are not your family and friends. You are also not your ego. You are not the world around you, although to a large extent, what the world appears to be to you is based on your thought and beliefs, your filters and your ego.
Your ego doesn't want you to even know there is another you, a true you. The you that is not fooled by the illusions. The real you that always knows what is true and real and what is illusion and falsehood. It doesn't need a lie detector. It doesn't need an expert or a pundit. It just knows.
Last week I said we all need to know ourselfs, where we are now and what is holding us back. More than that, we need to know who we truly are. We need to bring that true self forward and push that ego into the background (get thee behind me Satan!). That means no longer falling into the ego traps of victimization, i.e.:
"I'm a failure because I don't have a degree"
"My parents messed me up by ..."
"My lousy school teachers messed up my life by ..."
"I'm a rotten sinner and I deserve to be punished"
And on and on. The first thing you need to do to start on the path of true spiritual development is to stop blaming everyone else and take responsibility for yourself. You can't change the past, but you can change how you react to it.
The hardest part is convincing your ego to step back and let the true you come forward. Whether you call the true you the Higher Self, the Unified Self, the archetype, the Luminous Self or the Christ Self, it has to come forward if you are to be saved, and the ego will fight against that. This is why many spiritual people have gone through a crisis, often called "The Dark Night of the Soul", which forced the ego into the background. That is not always necessary, fortunately. It is possible to convince the ego that allowing your true self to come forward is the ego's best chance of survival so it is to his/her benefit to let the true self come out. It also helps to let God shine through you by agreeing to let His will be done. Not just saying "Thy will be done" , but actually meaning it.
