Gems and Crystals: Sphene

Sphene or Titanite is an unusual gold-green colored gem stone.  The name titanite comes from the titanium content of these stone and is the approved name by the International Mineralogical Association but that is a more general name that covers stones other than sphene so many continue to use the name sphene.  Sphene is a very brilliant, fiery stone but is not very hard.  It's lack of hardness makes it unsuitable for rings, but it is used in pendants and broaches.  Sphene is found in a variety of locations worldwide including: Mexico, Brazil, Canada, USA, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Switzerland, Italy, Pakistan and Russia.

Folklore and Healing:

Sphene is reputed to help plants grow.  For people, it promotes calmness.  It is also said to be a "mental" stone, promoting learning, studying, debating and processing information.
It's color makes sphene a healing stone for the solar plexus and heart chakras and the organs in that part of the body.
