Scientists thought that cracking the DNA code was going to give them the understanding of how life is created and sustained.  Now they find that there just isn't enough information in DNA to direct the building of a complete body from a fertilized egg.  Something else must be involved in the process.  
    Biologist Rupert Sheldrake calls that something else that directs this growth morphic fields.  He believes morphic fields organize everything from the formation of atoms all the way up to planets, solar systems and Galaxies.  It is a field of coherence that is non-physical.
    This sounds much like what Alfred Wallace suggested to Charles Darwin when they worked together on the theory of evolution.  Wallace felt that random mutation could not account for the way mutations happened and there had to be a guiding force, a field or mold for the mutation to follow.
    Those of us who have studied spiritual teachings are not surprised by any of this.  Spiritual teachers  have known about, and written about,  these organizing fields behind matter for thousands of years.  We call the morphic fields spirit.  And the spirit body must exist before the physical to provide the organizing field that guides the development of the physical.
