Gems and Crystals: Malachite

Malachite is semi-precious stone used in jewelry.  It is made up of bands or dark and light green.  I like the way it looks so it's one of my personal favorites.  Malachite contains copper and in past centuries was sometimes smelted to get the copper.

Folklore:
Its used for protection, power, peace, love, and success in business.   It is worn to detect impending danger, and is assumed to break into pieces when danger is near. It is the guardian stone of travelers. It removes fellings of hurt, resentment and other negative emotions.  The ancient Egyptians used it in statues and it was said to symbolize the power of the sun.  In old Germany, malachite was attached to an infant's cradle or bed to keep away evil spirits.  It was thought to work best if an image of the sun was carved on the stone.

Healing properties:
Promotes inner peace and hope, provides protection and security.  Believed to aid regeneration of diseased or damaged tissue.  It is also used for arthritis and other joint problems.  It's green color will energize the heart center and organs in that area of the body.

Russian artist Vera Kelinowska got inspiration for her Stonebirds quilt from a piece of Malachite.
