The Wizard and the Priest
The priest had been giving a sermon in the square in the center of town. He was a missionary seeking new converts. After he finished his talk and was preparing to leave, a wizard approached.
The wizard had great power in this town for the people feared his magic. He did good things sometimes, but it was said he could kill or maim with a glance if he wished to. It was also believed that he could take over the mind of others and make them do his bidding. These stories were exaggerated, but essentially true. The wizard was not happy about the priest trying to convert the people of this town. He told the priest: "you are not welcome here. These people don't need your teachings or your religion." I disagree" the priest replied. "I think they need it very much and have welcomed me to speak here". This angered the wizard and he said to the priest "If you think your religion is greater than mine than I challenge you. If you cannot beat me in the challenge, you must leave this town and never return." The Priest accepted the challenge. They agreed to meet in the town square again in the morning just after sunrise.
What the wizard did not realize is that this was not one of those new priests who knew nothing but what he read in a book of scripture. This was an old-school priest who knew as much of magic as the wizard did, but of a different kind.
The wizard arrived with his wand, mojo bag and the finger bone of a dead wizard in his pocket. The priest had his staff of office covered with religious symbols, his blue bottle of holy water and a variety of gems, crystals and stones hidden within his vestments.
The wizard began chanting spells and hexes. The priest recited prayers. He kept his eyes locked on the wizard. He dared not blink and give the wizard a brief, but very real, advantage. The wizard smiled. He thought it was going to be easy.
The wizard raised his wand and sent a flash of destructive energy toward the priest. The Priest held up his staff and the ball of energy struck it than dissipated harmlessly. The wizard threw a poisonous powder toward the priest. Again the priest raised his staff and a sudden wind came up and blew the powder away from him.
The Wizard was really getting angry now. He had not expected such strong resistance from the priest. The wizard shook his mojo bag and mumbled incantations. Sores and boils began to break out on the priest. The priest grabbed a healing crystal in one of his hidden pockets and chanted a healing prayer. The sores and boils faded and disappeared.
The wizard had one final trick up his sleeve. He threw the dead wizards finger bone on the ground near the priest and recited another incantation. A smoky demon shaped like a large snake or dragon began to emerge from the bone and move toward the priest. The priest opened his bottle of holy water and splashed it onto the demon. The smoke demon disappeared into the ground.
The wizard fell to his knees, defeated. "you have won" he told the priest, "the town is yours". "I do not wish to take over the town" said the priest, "I just want the right to preach here to those who choose to listen". "very well" said the wizard, "you have earned that right".
A few days later the priest returned to the town square for one of his sermons. He was only slightly surprised to see the wizard in the audience.
