The simple design of a cross inside a circle is one of, if not the, oldest spiritual symbols.  It is generally thought that the cross is there to divide the sun into four sections representing the four seasons, but that doesn't explain why it was a religious symbol.  Interestingly, it appeared in much of the ancient world, a virtually identical sign, even though the ancient civilizations supposedly had no contact with each other.
