Religious Scientists: Copernicus

Nicholas Copernicus(1473-1543)

Copernicus was the Astronomer who put forward the first mathematical systems of planets going around the sun.
He was also a mathematician, a physician, scholar, translator, economist, etc.
He was also a Canon in the Catholic Church.  In fact, his new system of planetary movement was first presented to an audience that included Pope Clement VII in the Vatican Gardens.  It may surprise you to learn that the Pope approved and encouraged Copernicus to publish his findings.
Copernicus often referred to God in his writings and did not consider his system to be in conflict with the Bible.

After De revolutionibus was published, it continued to be supported by the church leaders of the time.  It wasn't until long after the death of Copernicus that it was added to the list of banned books in 1616.  A few years before Galileo got in trouble with the church for his writings on a sun-centered solar system.
