The Gifts of the Magi
Though there remains some mystery as to exactly who they were or how many, the Magi, or Magoi were probably priest-astrologers from Persia. The visit fulfilled prophecies of the Old Testament.
Matthew recorded that they brought three gifts: Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. These seem like strange gifts to bring a baby, but they have symbolic significance.
Gold is a gift for a king and recognizes Jesus as a King of heaven.
Frankincense was used by priests in religious ceremonies and so recognized Jesus as a priest.
The usual interpretation of the significance of myrrh is that it was used for embalming so recognized that Jesus would sacrifice himself for us. I find that interpretation difficult to accept. Would you bring the parents of a newborn embalming fluid as a gift? I don't think so. Since myrrh was also known for it's medicinal properties, I think it more likely the Magi intended it to represent that Jesus would be a great healer, particularly, a healer of the spirit.

Yes, they are interesting and the few historical records are confusing with the number of Magi ranging from two to twelve. I will be mentioning them again when I blog my version of Twelve Days of Christmas beginning Dec. 25.
