Scripture: Corithians Chapter 13, V 3-4
And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, I am nothing.
Charity suffereth long and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself; is not puffed up.
Paul is saying that giving to charity just to boost your own ego or to get recognition as a philanthropist is not charity at all. True charity is giving from the heart, giving because you want to share, not because you feel obligated to or to gain recognition for yourself.
That is the most obvious interpretation, but there may be more to it.
This Epistle seems to be berating some of the Corinthians for listening to the teachings of "The other Church". The One run by Peter and James and founded by Jesus. One of the teaching this church followed, in keeping with Essene tradition, was to give up all of their earthly wealth to "the poor", the community they were joining (the Essenes often referred to themselves as "the poor folk"). Paul apparently doesn't approve of this tradition.
